#FastSong 138: (Don’t Let Them) Cool off by Peter, Bjorn and John

Hey fast fans, thanks for being patient while I sort out some technical issues. Are you old enough to remember when a TV station had technical difficulties and put up a nature photo with the words please standby? That’s what this is. Happy Tuesday!

#FastSong 137: Let’s Go Surfing by The Drums.

Love this song!  And the album.  And the surfing theme still feels right even with all the snow because the sun is shining, we love rock and roll, and we’re invincible.

Enjoy your crunchy cereal and going to the mall.

#FastSong 136: I Come From The Mountain by Thee Oh Sees

Blame the snow for this terribly late posting. That and my crappy Motorola phone that crashed before I could upload earlier today.

Are you buried in snow like I am? It just doesn’t stop coming down here. And while snow can be a frustrating obstacle to what you want to do today, keep in mind it also provides a fun, cushiony, pillow to thrash around in. Cue Thee Oh Sees !

#FastSong 135: New Life by Depeche Mode. Happy New Year fellow horses !

It’s really hard to overstate how cool and new this was when it came out.  Beautiful, clean, and uncomplicated… Like the radio just opened a window and let the sunlight and fresh air in.   Especially remarkable how, given how new electronic music was, DM had already mastered the genre.  I can’t find a single thing about the hooks, the synth sounds, or arrangement of New Life that isn’t absolutely perfect or infectious.  Way to go dudes.

Great theme for the New Year isn’t it ? And this is my year!  So special shout out to all the horses out there, and wishing a new life and renewal to all.

#FastSong 134: A Sacred State by Holograms.

Über cool, dramatic, dark start to your day thanks to Sweden’s Holograms.  If you like this track – and I know you do or you wouldn’t be here – there’s plenty more to get your little piggy hands on, on their 2013 album Forever.  Frankly I had my pick of songs for today’s track and settled on this one.  Makes you wanna run doesn’t it?  Go!

#FastSong 133: New Direction by Black Lips

Shame on me for missing Monday.  No ideas until a T-Mobile ad came to the rescue with this fun, upbeat track from Black Lips.  Yeah I know it’s a couple of years old but when the universe offers you a gift take it!  Plus everybody knows that TV is the new radio.  Okay so the week officially starts now.

It would be hard to think of an artist more dedicated to peace, justice, and the betterment of humanity.  RIP Pete. Take a minute and wish him well. And while you’re at it, do something nice for someone.

I took the day off Friday to feature this today, since it kind of delivers the same rush as sweet cereal and inconsequential cartoon. violence. Thanks for the the suggestion user Tim.

#FastSong 133: Dream House by Deafheaven (live)

This goes way over my unwritten three and a half minute rule, but it’s hard not to be completely overwhelmed by the song and the impact singer George Clarke has over the crowd.  Never underestimate the power of a good scream. Happy Thursday y’all.

Here is the album version.

#FastSong 132: Violent Games by Poliça.

Found this cool, compelling track from Poliça’s 2012 record Give You the Ghost, and though it’s the only song that meets our specific criteria, the record has a cool, fun yet controlled electronic vibe.  Their 2013 release Shulamith is full on 80s electronic and definitely put a smile on my face; not that the songs are funny, just that in terms of capturing the sound and feeling of a specific part of my college years – dancing to Propaganda, Ann Clark, Kraftwerk in dark, dark club – they definitely did their homework.

Have a great Wednesday.  Please don’t freeze.

#FastSong 131: Love Missile F1-11 by Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

Retro Tuesday! So many wonderful bands out there today making awesome sounds but baby… admit they just do not make s*** like this anymore. Glam, violent, angry, decadent, indulgent, excessive and so, so, so arrogant. I loved this song when it was released, kind of like a rockabilly Frankie Goes To Hollywood. I do remember that it kind of failed to ignite on this side of the pond, probably because of its excessive minimalism and over reliance on studio tricks which believe you me, were impressive at the time. The sampler had just been invented FYI.

Boy this video has aged well! And if that groove doesn’t get you fired up on a freezing morning then I can’t do nothin’ for ya. Oh, and seriously, this has to be in the top five, best band names ever. Suggest others in the comments box…

#FastSong 130: Ewok Sadness by Marijuana Deathsquads

Slow build to this highly riveting track which suits me just fine on a cold Monday where second espresso is just not doing what it’s supposed to. Hope this kick starts your week. Off with you!

#FastSong 129: Son of an American by The So So Glos

Listening to the album and in all modesty I did a bang up job picking a soundtrack for your Friday.  This is the first song on 2013’s Blowout but don’t get too comfortable with it because I’m noticing a brand new 2014 release which I will run to right after this.

But yeah.  Invite your friends over, drink, laugh, and listen to Blowout.  You’ll love it, you’ll go out, you’ll make memories.  Then you’ll send me the photos right ?
